Intermediate, 2-3 Hours, 6 Mile Loop

Description

Start out at the Historic Port Gamble Village. Put in at the old mill site, just inside of the breakwater, you will be heading south into the bay from here. Proceed to do a clockwise loop of the bay. The seals in Port Gamble Bay are shy but curious, and a variety of bird life, including a couple of bald eagles frequent the area. Take a little time to explore the estuary at the head of the bay. About half the way north you will come to the sand and gravel beach access to the Port Gamble Forest Heritage Park where you can stop and have a picnic or go on to explore thousands of acres of trails. From here you will continue north along the shore back to the mouth of the bay. Kayak rentals are available.

Special Considerations

The difficulty of this paddle is very much dependant on the weather and conditions. There is often a significant wind from the north, and while you are somewhat sheltered inside the bay, the mouth where you start and finish can be rough. Try to plan your paddle in the same direction as the tides.
