Beginner-Intermediate, 1-2 Hours, 3 Miles Round Trip

Description

Start out at the Historic Port Gamble Village. Put in at the old mill site, just inside of the breakwater, you will be heading south into the bay from here. Follow along the west shore, to your right paddling around the former mill site. The seals in Port Gamble Bay are shy but curious, and a variety of bird life, including a couple of bald eagles frequent the area. About halfway into the bay you will come to the sand and gravel beach access to the Port Gamble Forest Heritage Park where you can stop and have a picnic or go on to explore thousands of acres of trails. Kayak rentals are available.

Special Considerations

The difficulty of this paddle is very much dependant on the weather and conditions. There is often a significant wind from the north, and while you are sheltered inside the bay, the mouth where you start and finish can be rough. Try to plan your paddle in the same direction as the tides.

Going Farther

Do a clockwise loop of the whole bay stopping at the Heritage Park for a picnic break.
