DESCRIPTION:Description: http://www.harborwildwatch.org/programs/public-programs/beach-monitoring/ \nBeach Monitoring is one of Harbor WildWatch’s signature Community Science Programs where twice a year (summer & winter)\, we collect data from nine different beaches throughout the South Sound area. This information helps us determine how the beaches change over time and could be useful in determining the impact of a future natural or human induced event. \nWe meet in the parking area of the beach at the scheduled time and walk to our monitoring site about 10 minutes after. See below for more detailed directions. If you know beforehand that you will be late\, please contact Stena\, and she can provide any special details as well as day of event contact information. Participation with these special citizen science events gets you\, your friends\, and family directly involved with the protection of our local beaches and who knows\, may even inspire future ecologists. Mark your calendar for any or all of these upcoming events. Remember\, you don’t have to have a science background to participate\, nor are you required to stay for the entire duration of the typically 3-4 hour program. All ages welcome. \nPenrose Point State Park: Discover Pass Required. Once you pass the first gate to the park\, take a right at the “T” in the road. This will lead you to the general parking area. Walk across the grassy field and our monitoring site is on the beach to the left. \nContact Stena@harborwildwatch.org for information at least one day prior to the event.

If you arrive late\, find us on the beach! \nIn addition to our beach walk on Tuesday\, July 30\, you are also welcome to learn more about intertidal photography with Steve Henry! Steve is a local wildlife photographer and will have professional and fun tips for both DSLR photography with digital cameras\, as well as iPhone photography. Once you reach the end of the trail\, there are stairs leading to the beach and our monitoring site is to the right. \nContact Stena@harborwildwatch.org for information at least one day prior to the event.

DESCRIPTION:http://www.harborwildwatch.org/programs/public-programs/beach-monitoring/ \nBeach Monitoring is one of Harbor WildWatch’s signature Community Science Programs where twice a year (summer & winter)\, we collect data from nine different beaches throughout the South Sound area. This information helps us determine how the beaches change over time and could be useful in determining the impact of a future natural or human induced event. \nWe meet in the parking area of the beach at the scheduled time and walk to our monitoring site about 10 minutes after. See below for more detailed directions. If you know beforehand that you will be late\, please contact Stena\, and she can provide any special details as well as day of event contact information. Participation with these special citizen science events gets you\, your friends\, and family directly involved with the protection of our local beaches and who knows\, may even inspire future ecologists. Mark your calendar for any or all of these upcoming events. Remember\, you don’t have to have a science background to participate\, nor are you required to stay for the entire duration of the typically 3-4 hour program. All ages welcome. \nTacoma Narrows Park: Despite the name\, this park is on the Gig Harbor side of the bridge. Through the gate\, you will enjoy a tree-rich drive down to the parking area. SUMMARY:Earth Day Weekend Tide Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join GPC the Saturday before Earth Day for a walk from the Point-No-Point Lighthouse parking lot to GPC’s Cohoe Beach Preserve. On April 20th at 10 am\, low tide will allow us to hike the 1.7 miles down to our pristine stretch of shoreline on Puget Sound. \nThe seven-acre Cohoe Beach Preserve is adjacent to a thirty-acre county-owned property envisioned as a future park. Together\, these properties protect 2\,100 feet of exceptional shoreline with tidelands that extend nearly one quarter mile out before dropping. The result? A unique home for creatures big and small\, including the forage fish\, shellfish\, and water birds who feed and dwell in the shallow water\, and the massive grey\, humpback\, and orca whales who swim and hunt in the depths off the shelf. \nGPC is very lucky to have salmon biologist\, Steve Todd\, and whale biologist\, Erin Falcone\, attending the event to give some context about the ecological importance of the area and the species that thrive there. \nWHEN: Saturday\, April 20th at 10 am \nWHERE: Meet us in the Point-No-Point Lighthouse parking lot — 9009 NE Point No Point Rd\, Hansville\, WA 98340 \nWHAT TO BRING: Shoes that you don’t mind getting wet and sandy; A water bottle; Weather appropriate layers; Binoculars\, if you have them \nKEEP IN MIND: The full walk down to the beach and back will amount to about 3.4 miles. The tide will work in our favor between 10 am and 2 pm\, and the packed sand of the shoreline should make for a fairly flat and easy hike. Feel free to walk just a portion of the way and enjoy some of the best bird-watching and whale-watching around.
