SUMMARY:Beach Monitoring - Mouth of Gig Harbor\, Old Ferry Landing
DESCRIPTION:http://www.harborwildwatch.org/programs/public-programs/beach-monitoring/ \nBeach Monitoring is one of Harbor WildWatch’s signature Community Science Programs where twice a year (summer & winter)\, we collect data from nine different beaches throughout the South Sound area. This information helps us determine how the beaches change over time and could be useful in determining the impact of a future natural or human induced event. \nWe meet in the parking area of the beach at the scheduled time and walk to our monitoring site about 10 minutes after. See below for more detailed directions. If you know beforehand that you will be late\, please contact Stena\, and she can provide any special details as well as day of event contact information. Participation with these special citizen science events gets you\, your friends\, and family directly involved with the protection of our local beaches and who knows\, may even inspire future ecologists. Mark your calendar for any or all of these upcoming events. Remember\, you don’t have to have a science background to participate\, nor are you required to stay for the entire duration of the typically 3-4 hour program. All ages welcome. \nOld Ferry Landing at the Mouth of Gig Harbor: There is very little parking at this location\, so I recommend the angle in\, public parking on Harborview Drive past the Soundview Drive intersection (near Tides Tavern). The Old Ferry Landing is a short walk to the end of Harborview Drive. The path down to the beach is mildly treacherous\, please use caution. Once you reach the beach\, the monitoring site is to the left (facing the water). \nContact Stena@harborwildwatch.org for information at least one day prior to the event.

SUMMARY:Belfair State Park Low Tide Beach Walk
DESCRIPTION:Get to know the unique animals that inhabit the intertidal zone with biologists and volunteer naturalists! Harbor WildWatch’s low tide beach walks are FREE* and suitable for all ages. Each beach walk will last approximately 60-90 minutes and includes a lesson on beach etiquette. No two beach walks are the same; we never know what amazing animals we will find! \nDiscover Pass or day-use fee required. Meet in the day-use parking lot area in the grass\, just in front of the beach. We will wind our way up the gravel foot path to Little Mission Creek\, then walk into the creek and follow the creek to the oyster and eelgrass beds in the beach’s cove. Boots or closed toed sandals are HIGHLY recommended for this walk as the majority of it will be walking in the shallow (ankle-deep) waters of the creek! Flip flops or other open toed footwear will likely fill with mud and water and get caught\, causing safety concerns. \nThe walk is approximately 1.5-2 miles total. Participants may stay for the entire walk\, or leave early; walking back up the creek. This beach is particularly muddy\, so it is essential that you stay in the creek bed to avoid sinking. Creatures in the eelgrass beds include ochre\, pink\, and mottled sea stars; moon snails; flounders; graceful crabs\, and more! \nLow-tide on 6/17 is at 11:44am and is a -2.6\nLow-tide on 7/16 is at 11:25am and is a -2.03 \nDiscover Pass is required to park at Washington State Parks. https://discoverpass.wa.gov/ \n*Donations are appreciated. SUMMARY:Beach Monitoring - Maple Hollow
\nMaple Hollow: This lesser known park includes a hike (less than 1 mile) to the beach. You will turn on Van Beek Road KP N and drive until you see a gate on your left to Maple Hollow Park. Pull in and drive to the parking area. Follow the “beach access” signs down the hill. Once you reach the end of the trail\, there are stairs leading to the beach and our monitoring site is to the right. \nContact Stena@harborwildwatch.org for information at least one day prior to the event.

SUMMARY:Beach Monitoring - Narrows Park
\nTacoma Narrows Park: Despite the name\, this park is on the Gig Harbor side of the bridge. Through the gate\, you will enjoy a tree-rich drive down to the parking area. As you walk down the concrete path to the beach\, our monitoring site is a ways down the beach to your right. \nContact Stena@harborwildwatch.org for information at least one day prior to the event.
